First Launch & Permission Setup
After installation, launch Overseer for the first time:
- Locate Overseer in your Applications folder or use Spotlight (⌘ + Space, type "Overseer")
- Double-click to launch - You may need to grant permission for the app to run (first-time only)
- Grant macOS permissions - Overseer will request necessary permissions for system monitoring:
Essential Permissions for Monitoring
System Monitoring Permission (Privacy & Security → System Monitoring)
- Required for: CPU, memory, GPU, and process metrics monitoring
- Why needed: macOS requires explicit permission to access real-time system performance data
- How to grant: Click "Allow" when prompted, or go to System Settings → Privacy & Security → System Monitoring
Disk Access Permission (Privacy & Security → Files and Folders)
- Required for: Disk usage monitoring, I/O performance tracking, and SMART status reading
- Why needed: To monitor storage health and performance without accessing personal files
- How to grant: Grant access when prompted
Network Access Permission (Privacy & Security → Network)
- Required for: Network traffic monitoring, bandwidth usage tracking, and connection analysis
- Why needed: To monitor network activity (does not inspect content)
- How to grant: Allow when prompted
Optional Permissions
Accessibility Access (Privacy & Security → Accessibility)
- Provides: Enhanced process monitoring and window information
- Can be declined: Basic monitoring will still work without this permission
Screen Recording (Privacy & Security → Screen Recording)
- Not required for Overseer's core functionality
- Only needed if using screenshot-based monitoring features (not currently implemented)
